Pair Pretzel Armchairs by Norman Cherner for Plycraft USA, 1950-60s

Iconic Plywood armchair designed by Norman Cherner, set of 2.
Manufactured by Plycraft, USA between 1958 and 1961.

Seat made of plywood with teak veneer, legs and armrests made of solid beech wood.

When Cherner first submitted his design to Plycraft he was told that the chair would not be produced. A few years later in 1961 Cherner discovered his design for sale in a showroom in New York and being credited to a fictitious designer named ’Bernando’. He sued Plycraft and won the case.

So chairs marked with stickers that state the chair was designed by ‘Bernado’ are an indication of an early production.

Freshly restored state. One chair with a complete 'Bernando' label and one with a part of it.
