LAR Cats Cradle Chair by Charles & Ray Eames Armchair for Herman Miller, 1950s

Eames LAR Cats Cradle Armchair in Red-Orange on its original Cats Cradle base in zinc finish. It is very rare to find an Armchair on an original cat’s cradle base as the production numbers were a lot lower as the other variants !

Manufactured by between 1959 and 1962 by the Plastics Division of the General American Transportation Corporation. GATC was one of the first three makers of Eames shells. Recognisable by the double triangle marking.

Very nice shell with a lot of fibres in one of the first 6 colours released for fibreglass shells. Very nice state without fading of the colour, one very small crack of 1cm which has no influence on the solidity. Original shock-mounts, screws and base with a little superficial rust.

Height 62cm - Width 63cm- Depth 62cm - Seat Height 31cm

"The Eames LAR Cats Cradle Chair or abbreviated Low (L) Height, Arm (A) Chair on Rod (R) Base was one of the ‘original 5’ of base types the fiberglass shell chairs were released with, in 1950. Essentially designed as a lounge height chair, the LAR base developed the popular common name ‘Cats Cradle’ and remains a favorite with collectors today. The Eames LAR Chair was certainly a masterful design, different from any of the other options of the ‘original 5’ and providing a third lounge option for the plastic chair series along with the RAR and LAX (DAX Variant)." © www.eames.com
