Ant Chair Model 3100 by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, Denmark, Rosewood 1950s

The model 3100 “Ant" chair was created by Arne Jacobsen in 1952. It owes its name to the shape of the backrest which resembles to the silhouette of the insect. A true design icon, it is still in production today.

The chair for sale is a very rare piece, probably from the 1950s given the attachment of the base to the chair and the absence of a cap. Stamped with the manufacturers name Fritz Hansen.

Nickel-plated tripod base (more recent versions are chrome-plated) and Rio rosewood veneer. This wood is a protected species and cannot be not be used anymore since a long time. The multiplex backrest is solid (even if these chairs are not the most solids given their design... which explains their rarity!). The seat has been freshly treated with hardening oil.
